The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is a federal Crown corporation with the mandate to promote efficient and effective standardization in Canada. Located in Ottawa, SCC has a Governing Council comprised of up to 13 members and a staff of approximately 90. The organization reports to Parliament through the Minister of Industry and oversees Canada’s national standardization network.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Conformity Assessment Board member is responsible for the management and supervision of the IEC's conformity assessment activities, including oversight of the IEC conformity assessment systems. The CAB represents the IEC conformity assessment community.
Key Responsibilities and activities
Reporting to SCC management, Standards Solutions Branch, the Conformity Assessment Board member is responsible for the following:
- Setting the IEC’s conformity assessment policy;
- Promoting and maintaining relations with international organizations on conformity assessment matters;
- Creating, modifying and disbanding Conformity Assessment Systems;
- Monitoring the operation of conformity assessment activities;
- Examining the continued relevance of the IEC’s conformity assessment activities;
- Make recommendations to IEC Council for amending the IEC Statutes and Rules of Procedure;
- Approves and amends the Basic Rules of the IEC CA Systems;
- Ensures that the rules and procedures of the IEC CA Systems are consistent with the IEC’s conformity assessment policy and IEC Statutes and Rules of Procedure;
- Appoints the officers of the IEC CA Systems;
- Approves the annual accounts and budgets of the IEC CA Systems;
- Addresses and resolves appeals that have not been resolved by the IEC CA Systems;
- Establishes and disbands Working Groups (WGs) to accomplish the tasks within its responsibilities;
- Must participate and take decisions as an individual elected to represent IEC’s global community interest;
- Actively participate and contribute to meetings, review and respond to vote documents/correspondence and ensure that all positions and views (at meetings and by correspondence) are given equal treatment;
- Commit to actively participate on a minimum of one other working group;
- Comply with SCC’s Code of Conduct.
Essential Qualifications
- Relevant professional experience with standardization;
- Understanding of international and national standards development processes;
- Understanding and ability to speak the standards business terminology;
- Operation of national and international standards organizations, including the written rules, procedures and directives;
- Relevant professional experience or experience as a board member;
- Ability to travel and attend meetings in accordance with the approved meeting schedule;
- Working knowledge and the ability to apply the rules, procedures and processes:

- Standards Council of Canada’s Act, mandate, structure, plans and priorities;
- Understand the nature of international standards organizations’ work and its resulting benefits;
- Be fully knowledgeable of the subject and market needs;
