Would you like an e-cig?

What is an e-cig?

An e-cig is an electronic cigarette (e-cig or e-cigarette), personal vaporizer (PV) or electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) is a battery-powered vaporizer which has a similar feel to tobacco smoking. Electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco, although they do use nicotine from tobacco plants. They do not produce cigarette smoke but rather an aerosol, which is frequently but inaccurately referred to as vapor.

But how beneficial or harmful are e-cigarettes? The answer to this question is still unclear.

To this end, in January 2015 CEN created new Technical Committee - CEN/TC 437 'Electronic cigarettes and e-liquids' where AFNOR (France), holds the secretariat of this new body. The aim is to develop European Standards dealing with safety aspects for both e-cigarettes (mechanical, thermal, electrical and chemical hazards etc.) and e-liquid (the content of chemicals including nicotine and formaldehyde, black listed components: heavy metals, allergens etc.), as well as analytical methods providing a basis for determination and quantification of all chemical components stated in the requirements relating to safety of these products.

Do you know anyone who smokes e-cigs? Would you like to try? Do you think we need to regulate this product in Canada?

Just to be clear Suzanna that there is a difference between an eCigarette and a Vapourizer. They heat up, and deploy the nicotine using different methods, and therefore make the experience to the end user completely different.

I think it is the liquid that needs more guideline than the actual eCig device.

The device itself is simple, and has been around a very long time - a battery required, user operated piece of equipment that is either on or off. It is the liquid ingredients, and the transformation into the vapour that needs to be scrutinized from a health and standards perspective imo.

US Get a Little Tough on E-Cigs

With the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes, poison-control centres are reporting a sharp increase in the number of people sickened by exposure to the toxic, highly concentrated nicotine used for vaping in the US.  Most of those affected are kids, who may be attracted to the often brightly colored liquid that is often marketed as having a sweet, candy like flavor.  The Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act (S-142) would require mandatory child proof packaging and it is before the Senate right now.
