New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard Published
New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard Published
Just wanted to share the news release on the publication of the new edition of the standard for alpine and snowboarding helmets. Conoformance with the standard requires 3rd party testing to ensure that products meet the requirements of the standard. Soon we should see certified helmets available. If you have any questions about the standard, let me know. Here is the link to the press release

Re: New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard...
Good timing, with the ski/snowboard season right around the corner. Jeanne, do you think products will be certified to the new standard and available to consumers this season?
Re: New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard...
Yes, there has been interest from a manufacturer in certifying to the new edition of the standard

I doubt products will be available to the new standard for this season, just based on the lead time for production and certification. Realistically, you'll see some products for the 2015/16 season -- but most manufacturers/retailers will have inventory to the old standard, and will continue to sell-through.
The nature of the consumer product supply chain, unfortunately.

Thanks, Andy. That's a point I hadn't considered.
Re: New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard...
Question of curiosity: Could the manufacturer still certify to the superseded standard?
Re: New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard...
An excellent question - I checked with our Certification Group and I am advised that once the new edition is published, they do not test and certify to the earlier version. I am also advised that we do not have any certified products under the previous edition.

Re: New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard...
Am I correct to assume that this is true of any superseded standard? What if regulations have not yet been update and certification is required by the regulation? Are those products still certified to previous editions (i.e., superseded standards)?
Re: New edition of Alpine and Snowboard Helmet Standard...
It is a great initiative by CSA to develop this standard! Considering that "...4.4 million Canadians hit the slopes every winter and Canadian ski slopes see 19 million visits per season.." (knew that the number was high, but this is amazing) it will be extremely important to have a standard for snowboarding helmets in place. I do wonder how many of those Canadians who hit the slopes get injuries from not wearing one...
Thanks for sharing!
