Scope:

The standard covers bird-friendly elements of building to reduce the likelihood of bird collisions. This may include topics such as:

Glass types and visual characteristics
Reflection, transparency, and shading of windows
Building features to reduce collision rates
Design to eliminate fly-through conditions
Black hole, passage effect
Overall building envelope
Effective lighting
Awnings, overhangs, screens, shades, shutters, and grilles
Visual markers on glass elements
Location and extent of bird-friendly elements for various building types (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial, institutional)
Design traps
Ineffective techniques

Project need:

The Standard will aim to help to reduce the number of bird fatalities in urban areas by providing clear requirements for elements of buildings such as windows. This will assist owners, designers, architects, and regulators provide bird-friendly glass solutions to reduce the likelihood of bird collisions.
