Human Research Standards Organization (HRSO) joins the roster of standards development organizations accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) to develop National Standards of Canada.
HRSO is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that develops national standards for Canadians conducting, overseeing and participating in human research. It unites progressive, insightful Canadian human research visionaries and advocates to interpret, frame and reform the national human research landscape through national standards development.
Given the fundamental and societal importance of human research, it is critical that it be conducted ethically, scientifically, and in a manner that safeguards the rights and welfare of research participants,” said Dr. Janice Parente, president and CEO of HRSO.
“National standards promote uniform conduct and oversight of human research from one organization to another, and from one province to another – breaking down barriers to harmonization, collaboration, and growth of this sector within Canada and globally,” added Parente.
HRSO, as an accredited standards development organization (SDO), can now submit standards to SCC for acceptance as National Standards of Canada. HRSO is the twelfth SDO to be accredited by SCC, expanding the range of sectors that develop standards of Canada in areas vital to the country’s economic prosperity, safety and well-being.
“We are excited that HRSO has joined Canada’s standardization network as SCC’s newest accredited standards development organization,” said SCC CEO Chantal Guay. “We welcome the Canadian research administrators, researchers, bioethicists, regulators, sponsors, policy makers, insurers, auditors and research participants, whose combined efforts will inform HRSO’s national standards,” she explained. “By adding to the breadth of accredited standards development organizations, Canadians will be better served by standards that benefit from a variety of expertise.”
