In her keynote address at the Society for Standards Professionals’ annual conference, SCC’s CEO Chantal Guay called on participants to envision a better future built on standards.
“Imagine a world where every innovator is using standards and is involved in standards development, to ensure that his or her technology remains performant and useful,” said Ms. Guay. “In that world, standards are developed, maintained, and advanced within months, not years, because we want to make sure they remain useful and relevant. In that world, the economy is stronger and quality of life is better.”
Reflecting on this year’s conference theme, Standardization: Towards a Better Quality of Life, Ms. Guay shared three key steps to use standards as a way to improve economic well-being and quality of life: build a better standard, build awareness and build a better system.
She highlighted how SCC is already taking these steps with its flagship innovation and environment programs and its effort to promote gender responsive standards and standards development.
“It’s not just about a better future, it’s about a better now,” said Ms. Guay. “We must adapt now. We must ensure that the standards we develop are the best standards for both northern and southern communities, so they help us face the challenges and impacts of climate change. “
We must ensure that we develop the best standards to support and encourage innovation. We need to continue to raise awareness of government and industry on the value of standardization, so they use it to reduce cost, to ensure interoperability, to facilitate trade. And we need to improve the system with maximum inclusiveness, diversity. Different perspectives, experiences, skills, expertise is what make standards relevant and useful.”
She also took the opportunity to stress that collaboration within the standardization network is key to its success:
“And that’s the beauty of standards. They are a collaboration and consensus-based document. They bring many minds working together to develop the best solution, and also to implement it.”
“It is exactly how I believe we can realize that imagined better world, by bringing this expertise, your expertise, to the table.”
