France enacts law-forcing companies to make appliances last longer - Interview with Aubrey LeBlanc from Consumers Council of Canada

Submitted by Daniel Ethier on Thu, 2015/03/05 - 14:42 to Consumer Safety / Sécurité des consommateurs

Under the new French Consumer Protection Law, France is ordering manufacturers to inform consumers how long they can expect their TV, cell phone or other appliance to last — before they buy it.

A new French government decree that came into effect this week aims at fighting so-called planned obsolescence. That is when companies design strategies to limit the life span of appliances, so that consumers will have to replace them. Violators face up to 15000 euros in fines.

NEW SUGGESTIONS FOR ISO/COPOLCO ACTIVITY

Suzanna Ersoy's picture
Submitted by Suzanna Ersoy on Thu, 2015/03/05 - 12:53 to Consumer Protection in Wearable Computing

Dear members,

As previously discussed, I am including a first rough draft of the New Suggestions for ISO/COPOLCO Activity for your review and comments. I have tried to capture some of the essential information and highlight the main issues regarding users’ privacy in wearable computing (while keeping the document brief). However, I count on your expertise to enhance the argument, clarify the issue, and express your concerns. Particularly, please include some examples of existing relevant standard work in section 5 of the document.

Would you like an e-cig?

What is an e-cig?

An e-cig is an electronic cigarette (e-cig or e-cigarette), personal vaporizer (PV) or electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) is a battery-powered vaporizer which has a similar feel to tobacco smoking. Electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco, although they do use nicotine from tobacco plants. They do not produce cigarette smoke but rather an aerosol, which is frequently but inaccurately referred to as vapor.

But how beneficial or harmful are e-cigarettes? The answer to this question is still unclear.

I wonder if anyone remembers seeing these commercials. I believe they didn't last long - as you can imagine many people thought they were too shocking...

- Workplace ads aired in Canada as part of WSIB's Prevent-It campaign.
