Following approval by the ISO Technical Management Board of a joint proposal from American National Standards Institute (ANSI - USA) and Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN - Germany), a workshop for the purpose of developing an International Workshop Agreement (IWA) on Specification and Method for the Determination of Performance Parameters of Automated Pipetting Systems (APS) is being held this May in Frankfurt, Germany.
An IWA is an ISO document produced through a workshop, not the technical committee process, which will provide guidance in the classification and determination of performance parameters for APS. The increased performance demands of APS necessitate the development of an international standard for these instruments and once the proposed IWA has been published, the proposers intend to develop this IWA into a full ISO standard following prescribed ISO procedures.
The usage of APS in laboratories worldwide has grown steadily in recent years. These systems may range from simple dispensing systems to highly complex robotic systems used to execute a wide range of liquid handling tasks. As the use of APS increases, the assays being executed on these systems have become smaller and are increasing in their complexity. These developments require the users of APS to match the performance of their robotic systems to the requirements of their laboratory needs and then verify that each APS is working within its specifications.
The IWA and the eventual ISO standard will have a powerful effect on the application of APS, and on the business success of the companies manufacturing, selling and servicing these instruments. It will also provide objective guidance to the end users of such instruments so they may match the performance of an APS to their laboratory needs.
Participation in the workshop is open to any interested organization, company or person. In addition to paying the workshop participation fee, each participant will have to cover his/her own expenses for attending this workshop. The exact fees for the participants will be determined together with the ISO administrative partner during the kick-off meeting when the plans for the workshop are finalized.
Please indicate your interest in participating in the kick-off meeting through email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your full name, address and contact information.
