Role for government

Overseen by the SCC, the National Standards System (NSS) is the network of more than 15,000 individuals and 350 organizations from across Canada dedicated to the promotion, development, and implementation of standards.

Governments rely on the NSS to help them negotiate trade agreements and act as part of the regulatory system. Government participation ensures that the NSS supports trade and public policy.

Government regulators play an integral role

• Creating regulations to protect the social and economic welfare of Canadians
• Working collaboratively with standards developers and conformity assessment organizations to develop regulations that meet the needs of government, industry and consumers

• Contact the SCC Policy Group, which works closely with federal, provincial and territorial governments to identify areas where standards are a viable tool or alternative to regulation. The group also encourages regulators to participate in relevant technical committee work as well as SCC advisory committees.
